Well basically I am going to America in the summer to do some voluntary work. The only problem is I dont speak "standard" English. When speaking to anyone outside of the south of England they get very confused about what I am talking about.
Obviously in the US alot of people wont understand what I am talking about. I have no problem "getting with" girls in England as well most of the time they understand me but I am not so sure about America.
I cant just change how I speak overnight as my family and friends who I grew up with spoke cockney or used slang. Should I have speach speech elocution lessons prior or would the American girls like how I speak? Btw, I speak similar to the actors do in Snatch / Lock Stock.

Honestly no, most Americans won't understand you well. My grandfather is Cockney and no one understands him when he has visited the US. You'll be able to communicate, but nuances will be lost! However, with that said, he is still incredibly popular. So long as you have at least a bit of personality everyone will want to hang out with you!

What Americans refer to as "an English accent" is the RP BBC newsreader type - you'd have to ask one to understand why they find it attractive. What they always seem to fail to appreciate is the huge variety of accents in the UK. I'm sure most will have never heard anything like the way you speak. Though they may not notice the difference! The Queen is pretty untypical anyway, isn't she? Though it's noticeable that her accent has changed over the years - she was even more strangulated and "posh" years ago than she is now. If you can find an audio file of that speech she did when she was 21 about dedicating herself to the service of our country, and compare that with a recent speech, you really can hear it.

your language here in this forum is quite normal. i believe you are educated enough to know that you need to change some of the words you use. you won't have any trouble getting women, simply because american women love men w/ accents. just tone it down a little. start using language like the americans you hang out with and you'll assimilate just fine.

if you are trying to get laid... i don't think they will care whether they can understand you or not... most girls dig guys with other accents... i don't understand why either...
