When my computer first starts up and shuts down, I can see the image I set as my background very briefly. But while I'm actually using the computer, I can't see the desktop image at all, only a black background. I can change the color of the background but I can't change the image, the whole box to select an image is grayed out and I can't select anything. My hard drive was just defragmented a few days ago and I do a virus scan weekly, so I know those aren't the problems. The computer works well besides this, and (since I've been reading through other questions for help) yes, the monitor is on. I have updated drivers for everything in my computer, so I know it isn't that either.

Is there any way for me to be able to see my desktop?

I'm not exactly sure what the term 'active desktop' means, or what the 'active desktop' option is that I saw in other people's answers. I'm trying to change the desktop by right clicking the desktop and clicking on properties and selecting the desktop tab at the top of the window.

How do you go about changing your desktop picture?

Open up "Display Properties" either from right clicking desktop -> properties or by going to control panel -> display.

Once in their select the desktop tab, and then select the desktop you wish and hit apply.

Would help if you told me if you were trying to do an 'active' desktop or using the steps I just said :s.

I've always just right clicked on the desktop, clicked "properties," and then the desktop tab.

Active desktop means the same as "desktop." - I'm not positive, but I"m like 99% sure about that.

If you can't see the image, it is probalby because the image is too small. Try cascading the images instead of centering.

BUT TRY THIS FIRST: on that desktop tab, click "customize desktop" and then click the "web" tab, and make sure "lock desktop items" is unchecked.

In start\programs\accessories\paint, you can also set an image to desktop, under the "file" tab.

You might try finding the original picture, right-clicking it, and selecting 'Set As Desktop Background' and seeing if that helps.

You might also try fiddling around with the controls under the Appearance tab in the Display Properties panel. I reccommend looking through the advanced options.

Try this out, minimize all windows you may have open and look for a space on your screen away from any icons.Right click on your mouse, a op down menu will appear. At the bottom of this list is " Properties". Click on this with the button on the left of your mouse. A window titled "Display Properties" will open.It should have tabs at the top:"Themes", "Desktop"," Screensaver".... and so on. Left click on the one that says "Desktop". You will have a mini screen that displays the picture you choose in the list. If you would like a picture that is saved in one of your folders such as "My Pictures", hit browse. Upon making your selection make sure you click on "Save" or "Open" or "ok".
hope I have been of help
