What are they?

The little wooden things are wedges, and they're used to stretch the canvas tighter if it begins to sag. Look inside where the stretchers join in the corner - there is a small space where the wedges will fit in, flush against the stretcher. If your canvas sags (which they may if there is a big change in humidity) you hammer those little wedges into the corners and it forces the bars apart a little - which tightens your canvas again.

Your canvas should have little holes on the back where you can put those wooden things in so you can either prop it up or carry it without touching the wet paint.
