Birds do NOT adjust well to weather temp changes. Any such changes should be gradual and no BREEZES.

It could be a lot of things. A bird that is one week old should still be in his mother's care. I have to wonder about his diet. Birds need a lot of special care and it has already been mentioned about extreme temperatures and moving them inside and out must be done carefully and only under proper conditions. With the bird flu scare around, they are telling bird owners to keep their birds inside. My sister's mccaw had been raised outdoors. After big $ it was discovered he had round worms that they thought he had caught from the droppings of wild birds. Before you get a pet, you need to spend a lot of time figuring out how to take care of them so that they are healthly and live a long life. You can learn about most anything on the internet. There are articles and articles about the care and feeding of cocatiels. Read up.

I'm sorry for your loss... i recently lost a baby cockateil I was hand rearing. He was injured in the nest and it made him very weak. Even with almost constant attention from me and regular vet visits, one morning he just didn't wake up. I still get really sad when I think about it. He had just gotten to the stage when we thought he actually might make it... I miss him terribly.

To try and answer your question;

Cockateils are not tropical birds, as a previous person stated. They come from Australia, like budgies. Taking your bird outside would not have killed it, as long as it was a relatively stable temperature (meaning it wasn't freezing or super super super hot), as long as it wasn't left out there for a very long time alone and as long as it wasn't weak to begin with.

You said you got him when he was about one week old. Do you mean one week old or one week out of the nest? If you mean one week old then it may have been that he was already weak, as when birds are hand reared by someone inexperienced in this area, they are often weaker and many do not survive.

Did he seem less active and weaker before you took him outside? He may have been sick and taking him out side made it worse. taking him outside might also have had no effect at all on his sickness.

If you left him outisde unattended other wild birds may have come near his cage and he might have caught some illness from them.

It also may have had nothing to do with taking him outside at all. If you really want to find out what happened you could take him to the vet for an autopsy, although they might not be able to tell you and it can cost a lot.

I am very, very sorry for your loss..

Several things could have happened. He could have picked up on something outside like a virus or something from another bird that perhaps was nearby. It might not have even had anything to do with going outside, if you use air freshners, sprays, candles, etc, those can kill your birds. Also cooking with Teflon is not just bad for us, but extremely poisonous for birds! The best thing to have done was to have taken your bird in for a necropsy(autopsy) to have them find out the exact reason just for future referrence! Sorry for your loss!

Temps can harm them, Cocatiels are tropical birds. If it was worm was the bird put in direct sun? If so that can cause many problems. He may have already been sick and just didn't show any signs of illness. It's really hard to say what may have killed him.

What kind of symptoms did he have prior to passing, if any?

I had a cocatiel that i had no idea what his age was(he was given to me and they didn't know his age either), on day he fell off his perch and seemed ok, but then he started having breathing problems about a week later, we found out he had a heart problem. It was very sad.
