We're looking for nice things, but we don't want to pay extravagant amounts of money. What would be some affordable stores that she would enjoy?

H&M is okay. They have really trendy stuff, but it's not very well-made- in fact, I would go so far as to say that 95% of the stuff they sell is garbage and a waste of money. The only things that are of okay quality are their coats.

I think you would do best at Macy's. Some days, in addition to sales, they give Macy's cardholders an extra 15% off. If that promotion is not running or you don't have a Macy's card, head up to Customer Service and get a visitor's pass- it will save you an extra 11%. Also keep an eye out for coupons in the local paper. I can't tell you how much good quality stuff I have gotten there for ridiculously low prices.

You should also head down to Canal Street. You'll find a lot of nice, inexpensive jewelry there. It may not be Tiffany's, but I guarantee that you will find a different pair of sparkly earrings for each day of your trip- and you won't pay more than $10 for everything. The quality is great, too. I've had a few pairs I got down there for years and no stones have fallen out or anything.

Century 21 is okay, too. The prices are right, but you have to sort through a lot of garbage to find the good stuff. You also need to get there right when they open, before everything is picked over.

Century 21, Filene's Basement, Daffy's, Barneys, Loehmann's - excellent discounts on better clothes.

Look for department store sales - Lord & Taylor has great sales - 15% off coupons in Tuesday and Wednesday newspapers. Macy's runs good sales - they offer newspaper coupons too. Check the "clearance" racks for prices that can be 75% off.

The east village is great for boutique shopping. There are some really interesting retro shops. Walk up First Avenue and come back down Second Avenue. These two streets have great inexpensive ethnic restaurants - be brave and try something new.

There are inexpensive "chain" stores like Conway, H & M, Rainbow Shops, Dee and Dee - but, you can get those things anywhere, and. on the whole, they are not well made.

Chinatown has some excellent prices on costume jewelry, scarves, handbags, etc. (don't have to tell you that the restaurants are great)

Have a wonderful time.

After many trips to New York I think that the best thing you can do is to go window shopping! Go to Bergdorf's, Henri Bendel's, Bloomingdales and so on. Prices are very high in Manhattan so you will probably just want to look then go home and try to recreate the styles you see when shopping from more reasonable places. This way you will save a lot of money and have a great time.

take a trip out to the outlet centers...there's one north of the city, Woodbury Commons, and I believe buses run there. There's also another one on Long Island called Tanger Outlets, and I believe the Long Island Railroad runs there. As outlet centers, most of their merchandise is the same as what you'd find in the city but at a lower price.

This may sound weird....but grab a PATH train and head over to New Jersey (Pavonia/Newport station). There is a mall there (Newport Centre) which has many stores in there. With clothing, there is NO sales tax.
