The original definition of the word was the belief that the words of the Bible were inspired by God and should be believed and followed literally. The current use of the word resembles more of the definition of Orthodox than fundamentalist. The word is used to describe Orthodox Muslims (some would say radical) as well as extreme followers of other faiths.

Not sure that it is possible to answer your question as it stands.

It means nothing more than people who believe in some funamental things. It is often used as a term of abuse, but everybody has some things that think are fundamental.

Christian fundamentalists are those who believe in the fundamental truth of the Bible, as opposed to liberal christians who pick and choose which bits of the Bible they think are true and/or relevant.
It is not about believing the Bible should be taken literally (Some of the Bible is poetry - how do you take poetry literally?), it is a matter of understanding the intention of the author.

It is often used (by the liberals and agnostic) as a description of those such as creationists who accept that the Bible teaches Creation in 6 days.

But if you think about it these people are just as fundamentalist in their own way.

A fundamentalist is a religious person who believes that their faith must return to its foundations. Fundamentalism exists in Judaism, Islam, Judaism, etc...
They share some basic characteristics:
Fundamentalists do not allow for the interpretation of scriptures. They believe that the holy texts of their religion must be interpreted as written. They also believe in a rigid application of scripture.
They believe that scripture oversteps everything else. Historically, fundamentalism seems to be a backlash to modernity. Fundamentalists will often deny the conclusions of science when they contradict literal scripture (hence all the debate over evolution vs creation).

They take the Bible literally. The book of Revelation is an example. There are not real monsters in that book. The term is representing world governments. You need to check out the sources that the Bible refers to for accuracy. Also, they do and act out literal interpretations and get off on tangents.

Christian Fundamentalism was a reaction to Liberal Protestantism in the United States. Conservative (not referring to politics) evangelicals sought to keep Christianity to its core beliefs.
