First, you have to define the term:

"Defining "Overweight" is a sensitive topic. This discussion of obesity and body mass index is here to give you background information about the Body mass index (BMI) levels that categorize fatness. But BMI can potentially misclassify people as fat, even though their percentage of body fat is not excessive. Therefore, trust your own judgement about your own body because BMI-based body descriptions can be wrong."

Look at the BMI formulae from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Another way to see if you are overweight or obese or having too much fat is to check your bodyfat composition, percentage of bodyfat over your body weight. Please look at the table, if you have more than 30% fat (bet you are female) you may be overweight or overfat.

(3) Hydrostatic Weighing

You should be interested in getting to know the reasons why you become overweight or overfat:

(1) Faulty living style and inactivity
(2) Over consumption of fatty, fried, processed and refined foods
(3) Excess calorie intake (eating empty calorie foods, eating before bed)
(4) Eating too full too quickly
(5) Hormonal disorders (eg, after giving birth)
(6) Genetic factors
(7) Metabolic disorders
(8) Medical side effects
(9) Late nights
(10) Stress and depression

Calculate your percent body fat. It is Body mass index= 703 times your weight/height(squared) once you have your number compare it to this chart:

Given the reservations detailed below concerning the limitations of the BMI as a diagnostic tool for individuals, the following are common definitions of BMI categories:

Starvation: less than 15
Anoretic(n.)/Anorexic(adj.): less than 17.5
Underweight: less than 18.5
Ideal: from 18.5 to 25
Overweight: from 25 to 30
Obese: from 30 to 40
Morbidly Obese: greater than 40

that should be a starting point

They have an online weight chart, where you type in your weight and it says where you fall in the weight percentile. Here's a great website. Choose either adult or child.
