the proper height is 34"...we use bead board on the bottom half so we cut the bead board 32 inches......it comes 96" so u will get 3 pieces from one board....3 x 32= 96....u use a 2" piece of board to hold the cut bead board to the proper height....also depends on the type of rail ur using as to what height u install ur wall treatment under the rail....
if no bottom treatment is to be use, just a chair rail, then pop a line at 34" and install.....

36" to 40" is the standard.consider ceiling height and size of room.
