I seriously doubt it otherwise they would be putting their money where their mouth is.Instead of talking about something they know nothing about.I rarely ever see a stray dog in my neighborhood if I do and it comes to my house I look until I find the owner. If I don't find the owner i advertise in local paper and put out flyers.Never had to take one to a shelter.

I have volunteered at my local SPCA, I have taken a dog there, I have adopted a dog from there. Ok, the dog I adopted was the same dog I took in, more on that in a minute.
I have called animal control to come pick up stray dogs in my neighborhood, one dog was in my back yard with my own dogs, had a collar and tag. Animal control came out, ran his tag number, got the owners phone number and address and said he would go by to see if they were home to give them their dog back. On another occaision, a black lab female with 3 pups was roaming the area, I saw them over a course of about 3 weeks. Her 'people' had moved away and left her behind. AC was out a few times, they caught two of the pups. BTW, momma was achingly thin by now. I walked her down one day, caught the pup and walked back home with her following. Called AC to come get her and pup. They were amazed I was able to 'catch' her. In each case AC was very kind and concerned, said as soon as they got momma and pup to the shelter, they would reunite her with her other pups and get some decent food in her belly.
Regarding the dog I took to the SPCA, found a little scared skinny stinky dog on the side of the road, I knew they were a no kill shelter and Candy was a cutie, sure to be adopted before too long. I did not think I was ready for a third dog. A couple of weeks later, they called to see if I could foster the dog, I said yes. A couple more weeks went by, and I knew Candy was meant to be with me. Took her back long enough for them to spay her, signed the adoption papers, and brought her home to stay. Most shelters are run by people who truly love animals and want to do right by them, get involved and help if you think conditions could be better, do your part to make it so.

l looked for the owner of my now adopted dog even my pastor was helping. we made ads calls and even left signs up at the pet shop and vets. we just did everything to find the owner. then after l when though some paper forms, they let me keep her. the owner wanted her back but it was too late and the dog was scared of him. l went to the shelter on a few occasions to help a few Friends to adopt a dog. they were not really caring if they were mutts or not' it does break my heart to see the animals in the shelter because if they are not claimed or adopted out then after a time , they are put to sleep. Gosh l hope l am not upsetting any one. but l wanted to answer this honestly. and you must not travel much but in the rural areas this dumping off dogs, cats or other pets is a real problem. just take a long ride in the country and open your eyes. there are dumped pets out there that might not make it Thur the night, and why should l take a dog l found and put her in the shelter? if l have room for her, then l did the right thing.

I go every week to the shelter. I see the animals there, and it breaks my heart every time.

I have taken a dog to the shelter before. I had no choice. I found a dog stray, so I took her in, ran the ad, stuck up more flyers than I can count, without any response. I even called every shelter in the county, in case someone called reporting her. After two weeks, she went into heat. I wasn't home enough to make sure she didn't get "caught" my by dog. It wouldn't have been fair.

I took her to the pound, and she was adopted out within 2 weeks. It was the best thing for her. I don't regret taking her there.

I have also adopted 2 cats from the shelter. The one past away, and the other is still with me. She is actually helping me answer these questions!

Don't know what you are talking about. I just got back from my local shelter. I volunteer every Saturaday 8-6. My two mutts are from the local animal control.

About stray dogs some people can't house them until an owner is found. Like allergies, another pet that doesn't get along with other animals, the found dog doesn't like the pets you own, the place where you live has a pet limit.

Second not all dogs are lost. All are dumped when they are no longer wanted. You won't ever find their owners.

Maybe you should volunteer at your local shelter to see reality. I think you don't know what you are talking about.

Every weekend to drop off donations thank you very much.
The best damn dog that ever lived in my world was purchased from that same shelter 16 years ago for $40. I just lost him this year.

On your other topic....a neighbor found a dog roaming recently, put it in her car and drove the town. She had 30 people coming for dinner (formal) and couldn't take the dog home. So I took it. I called all the local vets, the police and animal control (shelter was closed). One vet told me to come in and have th dog checked for a microchip. Turned out it only lives 3 blocks away from me and the kids had let it outside after a bath (coller was taken off) and didn't watch it. Mom came home to find the dog missing and was out walking the neighborhood as I was driving to her house. She saw her dog hanging out my car window and flagged me down.

Taking a dog to the shelter is a last resort. Sometimes it's inevitable though whether we like it or not. Not EVERYONE has the means to take in strays.

I don't know what caused this rant, but we're not ALL evil here you know. (Although a lot of people think I am LOL!)

I've adopted 2 dogs and 2 cats from the shelter in the past and I volunteered at one.

When I find a stray dog in my area, which has been twice in the last two years, I call animal control to pick it up and keep it in my front yard away from my roommate's dogs till they get here. I have no idea what that stray animal is carrying in terms of disease and/or parasites and vermin and it would be quite thoughtless to take it in and expose other dogs to Lord knows what.

Y'all do what you want to do, as for me I'm not going to put someone else's animals at risk to play good Samaritan--I don't have the right to take risks with her dog's lives and well-being. The strays I find will continue to go to the humane society, where the owners are looking for them if they really are strays and not dumped.

I got my cat at the local animal shelter and my dog at another one of the local shelters. I guess I would have to go there to get them, huh?

How can you find the owner of a stray dog? A stray dog has no owner. That was a lost dog.

Was this a question or a comment on animal shelters?

I would never take one to the shelter.... the odds of their survival where I am is only 20%...
All of my pets (I have 5!) have come from the shelter except one & that was just an impulse because I fell in love!
I have fostered before as well, and when that wasn't working well, I used an ad in the paper & an extensive interviewing system to find the proper home!

I don't understand what information you are looking for... but yes I have.

I volunteered at a shelter and fostered kittens for them. (The kittens were too young to be at the shelter.)

The folks who worked there were kind, dedicated and good to the animals.

The place was clean and well-lit and very people-friendly. Animals (especially dogs) were given every opportunity to live in a low-stress environment so they could be more adoptable.

I guess it depends on where you live--but the two shelters I have been in have been examples of what you would want for a stray animal. I have been in expensive kennels that weren't as nice.
