if you have a dvd recorder, then it should be simple plug your dvdrecorder output into your tv input , and your vhs video output into your DVD recorder input. . sellect which source you are using on your dvdrecorder. play any vhs video to check it is set up. when you are ready to record, pause the vhs tape at the point you want to start, start the record on the dvd recorder, then unpause the vhs tape.

if this all confuses speak to a geek in the electrical store or ask any 10yr old who appear to find technology simple rolling their eyes at anyone older

You need to buy a DVD Recorder (not a player).
Then, yes, you can copy them as you described
A few notes: Use always the BEST possible recording quality.
Finalize your discs. Avoid re-writable discs, they may not play on all DVD players
