This depends what you define as personal liberties. Every religion, {insert one here} has always been a factor in the development of culture. As these cultures developed, these religions have always been a factor for social peace and social justice. They bound the people together in common, and into special relationships with each other. As order, justice and peace are the highest ideals that we can hope for, I think that religion, whichever religion you talk about, promotes the things that create the best conditions for the most people to succeed.
Enlightened religion, of course is a bonus.
Contrary to rumors and ravings about religion being {insert comment here} they serve a HIGHER PURPOSE.
You cannot be free or even guarantee normalcy without the conditions that make them possible. I haven't felt that my personal liberties were threatened in my life by my religion, or anyone else's. In most places, people have freedom of concience, and despite some variations, most people don't have problems in this area. I would reply, Is FAITH the enemy of LIBERTY?

By personal liberties do yo mean the right to steel from people, the right to kill someone, the right to lie? I guess the answer would be yes in that case. If you mean the freedom from being stolen from, murdered, or lied to I guess the answer would be no. Religion is not the problem, it is people who radicalizes everything, and people that make religion cold, harsh, and judgmental that are the problem. Their is also a difference between faith and blind faith. Just because someone has faith, it should not give them a licence turn off their brain. So people need to continue to take a good hard look at who they are following or taking spiritual advice from. Religion is about love, peace, and forgiveness, which can only strengthen people's personal liberties.

Religion is the fine detail in belief, and they say the devil is in the detail. It not always the enemy of personal liberty, but is often at odds with free thinking.

Religion in all it's forms, is meant and was created as a means to "control" the masses. Therefore it's very design strips the liberties of those who partake. Making them helpless sheep who at any given time can be led to slaughter, without questioning or consulting reason.

Not at all -- because true liberty is having the freedom to do what we ought to do, and not necessarily the freedom to do what we want to do all the time.
Religion guarantees this form of liberty -- at least my religion, Roman Catholicism, does.

You bet.
So many think life is a gift, but it's not to be enjoyed except via self-denial, praying and singing hymns. What sort of "gift" is that?
There's a lot to enjoy. If you're not harming anyone, what's the big deal? Are they afraid that someone else is going to be happy while they choose their personal misery?
