people do not pick cats, cats pick people. Go to a pound with your kids and let a kitty pick them. It will be a perfect match.

Go to your local spca or humane society or kitty rescue society and talk to the people there about cats. Some older cats have had children in their lives so will know how to handle little ones, who might pull their tails, pick them up strangely etc.
I find domestic shorthairs aka tabbies are usually very good with children.
Just remember tho cats like kids are a lifetime investment, they'll need shots, vet visits , claws trimmed and can live to be in their 20s if treated well.
My little Jazzy will be 2 on the fifthteenth and she is the second rescue kitty I've had in the last 14 years . She's a calico /tabby cross.

I would suggest getting a grown cat from a shleter, that way the kitten months of difficulty are over, and they are in really really desperate need of a good home. I have adopted two grown cats from shelters, one who i had for 14 years, the other for 5 years so far. They are both excellent cats and we never had any behaviouual problems with them at all. Also, the people at the shelter will be able to tell you about their temperment, unlike many breeders you can expect them to be truthful because they are not looking to make money, but to match animals with the best possible family for them.

I agree with previous answer: cats choose you, go to the local shelter.
But, declawed are bad cats????? The declaw has nothing to do with their attitude. Also, tabby is just a pattern of colors. Russians and Siamese are specific breeds that are known to be testy.
You want a kitten for your kids...go to your local shelter where they are already checked out for diseases and have some shots and possibly already spayed/neutered. Get an ordinary run of the mill DSH (domestic short hair) and let your kids decide.

i might say that a Turkish Van, Ragdoll, or Persian may well be the wonderful because of the fact: Turkish Van: they have candy personalities, and are style. they are good with sons and daughters, and are often healthful. Ragdoll: A curious laid back cat that would desire to be happy to be around young toddlers. Persian: a touch lazy cat that would shelter it is self, and is unique! i would not propose purebreds, because of the well being problems and expenses. Get a mutt with a sort of breeds in them.

Find a litter of unwanted kits. Look into the box of them and see which are the best little kitties. You don't want less than two. Two are more than twice the fun of one, and they'll have someone to talk to. Don't pay attention to color, etc. Pay attention to how they get along, how active they are, etc. My two cats are brothers, look nothing alike and are wonderful companions to each other and us.

You can find cats who are smaller in size at the local shelters. They need homes way more than ones from breeders.

Definitely go to the shelter! Bring your kids & let them interact with the kitties.
I agree with previous answers that cats choose you! That has happened with all of mine & they are definitely the wise ones!
Do get two of them- one gets lonely & bored. Two together are wonderful to behold!

A Tabby hands down. Most Tabby's are very calm and loving. My tabby is 1 year old and she is very calm, loves everyone, and loves to cuddle. I would recommend getting a girl cat because they don't get nearly as big. But, make sure to get her fixed as soon as you are able to because their heat will drive you crazy!
