His disciples were gentiles and distorted the Jewish religion to appeal to other gentiles.
And then they attributed it to him.

Jesus was basically an orthodox Jew from the West Bank.
It was Paul that started a religion based on the Jesus character, which was later infused with Greek (pagan) concepts.
During the first few centuries of the common era Christianity evolved this way, shedding its roots as a Jewish cult religion and becoming widespread among in the Greek gentile world.
At the Council of Nicea, the tenets of modern Christianity were voted on and made into doctrine. This new unified religion served as a way to unite the Roman empire, now relocated to Constantinople.

Yes Jesus was a Jew as a man on earth, and followed the Jewish belief system thoroughly--which no other Jew was able to do (he was perfect, they weren't). Centuries before he was born his coming was foretold; he would be known as the Messiah (Jewish word) or Christ (Greek word)--both words meaning "anointed one." After he died his followers became known as "Christians," based on the word "Christ." They were--and some, like Jehovah's Witnesses, still are--proselytizers, so Christianity spread further and further afield. And the rest, as they say, is history.
As to what "Jewish Girl" and "VIM108" say: Jesus spoke primarily to the Jews, so the early Christians CAME OUT of the Jewish faith. They did not have to become Jews first in order to become Christians They were not a cult, although some Jews--especially the religious leaders--may have considered them so; and they did NOT receive help from the Roman government to spread. Why would the Romans persecute them--which they most certainly did--and help them at the same time? Illogical! Later, after the Christian truth had been watered down with philosophy and Greek teachings (such as the immortal soul) true Christianity became the Roman Catholic Church, which DID work with the then-declining Roman government to spread their beliefs--and territory--further afield.

This is a very complicated question. As well as the fact that Christianity quickly became a Gentile as well as a Jewish movement, Judaism during the period prior to the destruction of the temple in 70 CE was very pluralistic and diverse. The question of the "parting of the ways" between Judaism and Christianity is a huge topic. There were Jews who believed in Jesus.... even if there conceptions of him were not the same as later theological ones. Read a few books to see just how complicated it is.

Christianity was invented by a Roman Emperor which was in fact named after him-pretty ironic eh?
Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all the same religion, each one evolving out of the other. Technically speaking it wouldnt matter which one you are. The belief in God is the most important thing to jews and muslims, which is the gospel jesus spoke of. To christians, there is alot more influence in the belief in jesus himself.
You do the math.
Christianity speaks for itself- they believe what they want to believe.

First, Christianity is a way of life and not a religion. Religion is mans efforts to reach God. Christianity is God's efforts to reach man. Christianity is the life of Christ, manifested through us. As far as your question. Jesus brought his message first to the Jews of whom many believed in his mesage and his teaching, All but his relationship with the Father and His Divine ability to forgive sin. This they rejected. The Apostle Peter was called to deliever his message to the Jews. Where as the Apostle Paul was called to deliever his message to the Gentile. The believers are followers of Jesus, and was called Christians, because they were Christ-like.

An interesting question considering a few facts.
Jesus did not come to do away with the Law but to fulfill it.
Jesus did not suggest starting another religion.
Religions are man made.
Those that claim to follow Jesus Christ are called Christians.

Since Jesus was Jewish, the early Christians declared that in order to join their new religion, people had to convert to Judaism. This requirement did not prove to be very popular, so they decided to drop the requirement. If I am not wrong, it was Paul's decision, since he wanted to gain as many new converts as possible for Christianity.
