My bf has a 2005 Jeep Laredo. It's nice and attractive looking, but it's still newish and the check engine light comes off and on repeatedly. Now it makes a weird noise when we're driving faster than 60mph. And also Jeep is notorious for its bad transmission problems. He said after this one he'll stick to Hondas and Toyotas. Don't buy Saturns either.

Depends what you mean by "quality"

On a scale of 1-10 overall reliabiliy is about a 5, if that

On a scale of 1-10 build quality is about an 7 for the mechanical parts and exterior and about a 6 for the interior quality.

If reliability is important to you, I suggest that you take a look at Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide. You'll find it in your local library or bookstore. It is the only 100% non-biased source and it is one of the most comprehensive tools for researching cars and trucks you will find.

The only Jeep I would buy would be a Wrangler Rubicon (If was was going to drive up boulders in Moab) or maybe maybe a Liberty diesel (because I love diesels and it is the only diesel compact SUV on the market here)

Overall Toyota and Honda provide the better quality alternatives, they are much more reliable, retain much more value over time and have much better road manners and fuel economy than Jeeps do, which makes a lot more sense for the 99% of the time you are driving on pavement in the real world (lets be honest here)

The Jeep Liberty has been a pretty solid dud! They had a major recall last year on the Liberty, but I do not know if it involved the 2005 models.

No

Chrysler always scores near the bottom for quality in any consumer report. Jeeps have been made by Chrysler for over a decade now.
