and that's why she started a school in Africa rather than helping blacks in America. Do you agree?

I think she's just trying to get children all in one place so she can eat them. People wouldn't stand for that in the U.S.

I do not agree and I do agree with the New York Times writer that said Oprah should have started in Chicago. Oprah stated that when she asked inner city kids what they wanted, they all replied materialistic things like ipods and such. Remember that Oprah has long been a fan of Nelson Mandela dn I find it quite interesting that she sat right in between he and his wife during this (girt). All kinds of stars were there for the opening. If it was to benefit Africa then why make such a hyoe about it here. You know how mnay hungry American mouths she could have fed for 40million dollars. I'm sorry but it's the American people of all nationalites in America that have made her so rich. Why not spread the wealth around the U.S. I think it's a slap in the face to her fans that constantly give give give Oprah!

I'm not necessarily a fan of Oprah, but I did agree with her when she said that there has always been opportunity in America. The same cannot be said for Africa.

American children and African children cannot be compared. If an American truly wants to be successful, educated, healthy and wealthy, they have the option, all they have to do is WORK for it. Africans do not have it so easy. They can work harder than any lazy American has dreamed and have no hope whatsoever of improving their status.

It's called THE AMERICAN DREAM, not The African Dream for a reason. I'm glad I'm an American. :)

Sure most of them are but not all. i would say not to be stereotypical but most asians LOVE SCHOOL. but some smoke outside and come in when there are 10 minutes left to class so do indians and kids from the middle east because they know the value of education. but some indians try to be cool and fit in with the crowd . some muslims hide their identity and skip class to hang with the white people. i have black nerdy friends and i noe sum that have dropped out and cut class. hispanic girls arent into the work they're too busy putting on makeup in class but then again u have those that dun care about how they look and they get 100's u noe wat i mean... my point is we CAN NOT be stereotypical cuz every race has its good sides. i love oprah but some of her comments are very close minded.... =]

Most generally I think American students are much more selfish and less motivated than other nationalities. And if Oprah wants to give her money to little green men on Mars, if she can find a way, let her do it.

If Oprah's coronary heart is in Africa and that's the place she desires to place her funds it incredibly is nice. yet why she has to place down inner city young toddlers is previous me. i think of there are a number of egocentric human beings all over the planet she only hasn't looked i think.

i totally agree with her. american kids have this attitutde that they diserve everyhting and tha the shoulf have their ipods or their nike shoes or whatever. if i were oprah i would have totally opened a school in africa where the students would appreciate the cause and be grateful instead putting up this "american fascade"

Well maybe some of them are but her message has always been
that she will help people who are willing to try and help themselves.
Get out and do something to help yourself.Take note of the number of students who get on here with questions trying to get others to do their homework for them.
If she is doing good somewhere leave her alone.

One of the easiest and biggest mistakes anyone can make is to make sweeping generalizations about millions of people. Many children are selfish and lazy, and these traits can be found in any and all socioeconomic groups.

any form of help is acceptable, and i suppose that the U.S. government helps the children here, regarless how much it aids to the local schools.

Her reason is a littble wired, but i think she understands that children in Africa needs to have basic education rather than children in the U.S.

Hello =)

Bear in mind that Oprah has the capacity to offend even the one person on earth who I thought was impossible to offend......the Dalai Lama. He who is the worlds "Ocean of Compassion".....and is tolerant of everyone, including the Chinese who have occupied his country for more than 50 years.

In an interview with Oprah about 2 years ago, she said something to him, and he snapped "That is a stupid question!"

In His Holiness' 70+ years, that is the first time he has ever lost his temper with anyone......

So, we can assume that her attitudes and ideas are not entirely "appropriate" by any means......

Namaste,

--Tom
