They are disembodied spirits that can only beseen as shadows. This is why they search for people to enter and take control of.
They have a personality this is clear from the fact that Jesus conversed with them, asked them questions, and received answers. Luke 8: 26-33.
They are possessed of more than ordinary intelligence.. They know that Jesus is the "Son of God," and they tremble at his name because they know they will eventually be confined in a place of 'Torment." If you think you have seen a demon, chances are you have. I will share an experience with you so you don't feel crazy.
I can remember going to church when I was little and one thing that stuck in my mind as a child was if you ever come across evil or a demon all you have to do and you have the authority if you are a believer to say : Flee in the name of Jesus and it will flee from you.
So one night I was sleeping years after (and years ago) and I was dreaming someone was choking me. I woke up literally not breathing. I then was trying to yell for help. I couldn't and so I immediately had this sensation to cry out to God. I managed to get JESU . . . .. S out and whatever it was got off me and ran out the door. It was small, a shadowing looking figure with no definition of fingers and toes . .. . like a shadow. Anyway I know in my spirit it was evil. Call it what you want.

I'm an atheist, but, although I can't say that I truly believe in the existence of angels and demons and the like (still mauling it over), I see the existence of such as a possibility.
I'm not sure it was a demon. After all, a zebra can't change it's stripes. Maybe it was an angel or something else.
The question truly is, are they seen as demons because they are evil, or are they seen as evil because they are demons?

They don't show themselves as they are. They manifest as an angel of light, as a mysterious man with red eyes, an alien, a shadow person, a dead person, etc
Demons aren't honest.

ACCORDING TO ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY YES THEY DO EXIST.
however in islam it says that you can only see them if they chose to be seen in a human or animal form.
not all of them are evil some are good, some bad. They eat sleep have children die have freewill amongst other things that make them similar to humans.
but they have other differences.
