My roomate has two cats and apparently she doesn't know how to buy cat litter, I don't think it's my responsibility. Is there anything I can find around the house to replace store bought cat litter?

Well, my cat was finicky and hated store bought kitty litter, so at first we used dirt and since our friend was a mechanic, we also used oil absorbant.

We then realized that the oil absorbant was much cheaper (and didn't stink as bad as the dirt) and it also was available in a bulk size- a 20 kg bag- which was about $7 CAN!

Hope this helps! :)

Nothing that would be worth the effort and consumption of your time. You might as well just run down the road and buy some cheap litter yourself. The idea of shredded magazines and newspapers is dumb. They aren't very absorbent, especially glossy magazines. And who the hell wants to spend the time to do this? And paper also rots in the presence of bacteria and moisture. So if controlling odor and having a sanitary house is important to you, I'd scrap that idea.

shame on your room mate !you can take some news paper and cut it up into strips . also you can use magazines and do the same thing any kind of paper will work as long as you shred it into strips the only thing is you have to clean more often so they do not walk in it you also will have to remove the waste so it does not stink up your living area this works in a pinch until you or your roommate can get kitty liter . I have learned that it is cheaper in the long run to get the bigger bag of kitty litter that way you do not run out as often hope this helps

You could use Chicken Feed unstead! I am using it for more than a year instead of cat litter and it clumps very well and it is super cheap (6 Dollar at Farm & Fleet for a 50# bag)

ripped up newspaper. it's what you use for a cat right after spaying or neutering, so the litter dust doesn't get in the wound
