my dad said he was never popular when he was going through school, and i am. i'm a cheerleader, and a sophomore, and pretty popular all around. one time my dad caught me being kinda being mean to this unpopular kid. not real bad, but just kinda blah, whatever.

so he took me aside, and said that i ought to be friends with one of them, at least one. that it could make their life so much better overall. and i was like yeah, whatever, and i've been nicer. but should i really just go for it and like hang out with them and introduce them to my friends and vouch for them and all that?

what do you think?

also, if i do, how should i go about it, should i tell them about what i'm trying to do, or what?

He's right, you'll never know what it'll do for them. It could keep someone from committing suicide, or going crazy and shooting up a school. Those are extreme examples, but still... That's what could be on the line there. You'll also affect their self-esteem on the long term, give them a lot less stress to deal with.

And what's the negative for you? None. It might be tough to make your popular friends follow your lead, but if they don't, they're not cool anyway. Just don't pick someone that's way too hopeless, there are plenty of unpopular kids that could easily fit in with you and your friends, given the chance. I know, I was one. And I'll say, that I would be forever in your debt if you did something like that for me.

I think it's a great idea. It will say alot about the type of person you are. It takes a lot for a person to hang around someone not so popular considering what their friends might think.
What are you really afraid of? Surely you don't mind what your friends think of this person. It might put a smile on that kid's face if you were his/her friend. I'm not really popular myself and I know I would feel pretty happy if someone popular came up to me and talked to me.
If your friends were real friends, they would respect you for the friends that you make and wouldn't make fun of you.
You should explain to this kid that you're sorry for making fun of him/her and that you'd like this person to hang around you more. You never really know what you'll be doing for this person. And I like to believe that doing something for someone is a very selfless act that you'll one day be given credit for.

you should be friends with anyone. the point of being nice isn't to be able to tell your dad that you were nice to a "geek". the point is being a good person and becoming friends with someone who is probably an amazing person that you never bothered to talk to because you were more popular. be a friend if you want to be a friend, but be a true friend.

If you want........just don't think that you're better than them. The geek that everyone used to tease in when I was in high school is now an assistant district attorney......making a ton of money. It shouldn't hurt for you to be friendly to everyone......not just the popular people. That way you don't grow up to be shallow......like so many of my classmates have done.

Id try to be nicer but dont do just for him do it because its the mature thing to do. You dont have to be bestest friends with someone to let them know that you actually care about what happens to them. it will make them feel better
