Danke (pronounced danka)
Danke schön (pronounced Danka shurn)- If you just want to say 'thanks' in shops etc, these are the ones to go for.
Depending on context, you could also say -
Danke sehr
Vielen Dank
Ich danke dir/Ihnen
These are the ones people generally use. There are lots of other variations that someone living in Germany may use once in a blue moon, but I can honestly say you don't need them if you just want to be able to say 'thanks'.

Hello there,
I live in The Netherlands, near the German boarder. "Thank you" is in German "Danke schon" or just "Danke"
Eug.

Prof Lee wrote: ''Danke schon": In Dutch is "Dank U".
I'm sorry, but no, that isn't right in Dutch. It is not. The 'U' isn't capitalised and if you say ''dank u'' it sounds wrong, as it is formal. It's either 'dankjewel' or 'dankuwel', or you can say 'bedankt'. I should know as I'm originally from Leiden! :-)

Danke (pronounced dunn - keh) - forget about trying to pronounce Dankeschön - you will not need this.
