Yes my very dear friend Mr Semmington-Smythe the third once had this same problem! we were out shooting with a few other chaps and he scored a cracker of a shot! Well, when got it back from Pip his golden Lab, he showed it to me and it was still wiggling! I said "By Jove Berty old chap! I think you have a live one there!"
But no, he was adamant that it was just death throes, and he hailed his driver and we went off for lunch at his lovely little country estate. when we arrived he proudly presented the bird to Saunders (his butler) with instructions for it to be prepared for dinner with haste, but no sooner had he handed it over when Saunders suggested that the blasted thing was still alive, and not just that but currently attempting to remove his finger! Oh the look on Bertie's face! Saunders took his leave, straight to the cooks id imagine, who delt with the bird....Humm a very good dinner that was too...

As a butler is generally more intelligent than a Lord it would be statistically safe to assume he knows more than you.
So the pheasant probably is alive. And we have your intelligent serf not refusing to cook for you, just refusing to cook an alive pheasant.
I am sure if you dispatch the bird properly, to a level that the butler is satisfied that it is indeed dead, he will cook the bird for you then.
I can believe that you could have shot the bird thinking to kill it and it still surviving as a Lord probably thinks all animals brains are in their bum, just like a Lord, so you shot the bum and not the brain and that why you didnt kill it.

You need to complete the great hunters job and then your butler will cook the wonderful meat. What happened to your cook? Do you make the butler cook ?? First of all you need to take the pheasant out to your garage and chop it's head off. Then pluck the main big feathers off. Then take it in your fabulous home and prepare a large kettle of boiling water. Dunk the Pheasant up and down in the boiling water. Lay on the counter top and pluck the pin feathers off. Wash it off and then carefully take the guts out. Wash well and then go to get your butler. Tell him your pheasant is ready to cook. Better yet, you cook it.
Use a covered baking pan and place the pheasant in there. Rub the body with butter. Pour some chicken broth in the pan , about one inch of broth, cover the bird and bake in a slow oven of 325 degrees, for 3 hours. It should be tender. Invite your butler to eat with you.

Threaten to write a letter to the butler's mum stating that he is stepping out with the maid. If that doesn't work, sleep with the maid and have butler serve you both breakfast. Can't have the help being defiant.

Chop its head off (the pheasant, not the butler) and tell him to stop being a baby.
