My doctor just told me that sudafed is the best, and not to spend the money on the name brand, that the drug store brands work just as well! Good luck!!

Best Nasal Decongestant

(All the following medicine is available over-the-counter)

The best nasal decongestant is Sudafed PE (phenylephrine). It's actually the opposite of drowsy. It will make you alert, and possibly keep you awake.

The best allergy medicine is Benadryl (diphenhydramine). It is definitely drowsy. If you want a non-drowsy solution, you can buy Claritin (loratadine). But Benadryl is more effective. [If you're searching through your medicine cabinet at home, and you have any over-the-counter sleep aids, there's a good chance they contain diphenhydramine. It will do the exact same job that the diphenhydramine in allergy medicines do. They just approved it for both uses, so they sell it as different medications. However, the sleep aids sometimes use twice as much as the allergy medicine does, so keep it in mind.]

If you were to take both the diphenhydramine and the phenylephrine together, they would actually cancel each other out as far as drowsiness goes. A pharmacist once told me it was "a good combination" for runny nose & allergy symptoms, and for the non-drowsy factor.

I wrote the generic names of the drugs next to the brand name so you could identify them more easily. They probably actually sell a medicine that has both of those together (diphenhydramine and phenylephrine). But it's actually good to have both on-hand at all times, so buy both if you have the money (I would).

If you have regular Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) at your house, you can use that too. It's just that Sudafed was taken off the shelf because people were taking huge batches of it and using it as an ingredient to make crystal meth. Regular Sudafed can still be used safely as directed, though. Pharmacies still sell it, but I think you need to request it so they know you're not buying several boxes of it. The Sudafed PE works just as well, though, so I don't see any reason to buy the old Sudafed.

Sorry if the generic names confuse you. They're helpful for buying generics and for reading the active ingredient list on a bottle of Nyquil.

The benadryl and sudafed work in about 20 - 45 minutes. They both last about 6-7 hours. Read the directions on how often you should take them.

there are a number of the decongestants that will work as well as the next .
huge caution here, do not over use nasal sprays such as Dristan many people become dependent on them and it is hard to fix that.
follow the directions and heed the warnings on the packages

Everyone is a bit different. I would go with the exact symptoms and find a cure in genaric bottle. The medicine is the same and will work the same in almost all of the preparations, why spend double on robitussin brand.

Also you have the choice of sudafed but you have to ask a pharmacist to get it (thats my top pick).

A lot of them work - but can actually prolong the problem - a steamy shower room or a towel and a bowl of hot water with tea tree oil is the most effcient - great for your skin as well!!

Sudafed is the best decongestant. If you are looking for something for allergies, try Claritin. If you want both Claritin and Sudafed together, get Claritin-D.
