To effect a confusion of ideas is an old scheme of the devil. Not to understand clearly and precisely is generally the source of the intellectual error. In time of schism and heresy, to cloud and distort the proper sense of words is a fruitful artifice of Satan, and it is as easy to lay snares for the intellectually proud and for the innocent. Every heresy in the Church bears testimony to Satan’s success in deceiving the human intellect by obscuring and perverting the meaning of words. Arianism was a battle of words and owed its long-continued success to its verbal chicanery. Pelagianism and Jansenism showed the same characteristic, and today Liberalism is as cunning and obscure as any of its heretical predecessors. (Liberalism Is A Sin 55)

On December 8, 1864, Pope Pius IX published The Syllabus of Errors. In short he was condemning “liberalism.” The popes' condemnation and concern about “liberalism” is a valid one. The following distinction about “liberalism” is made in a

religious context:
Liberalism is the dogmatic affirmation of the absolute independence of the individual and of the social reason. Catholicity is the dogma of the absolute subjection of the individual and of the social order to the revealed law of God. (28)

In this context every person and society conforms themselves to God’s will or defies it.

The book LIBERALISM IS A SIN was written more than 150 years ago and yet seems very relevent to today.

It should not escape your notice that the "liberalism" Pope Pius was discussing was not the same as the political views put forward by modern American Liberals. The word "liberal" does not here contrast with "conservative" Its the same name, but with a different meaning. Much like the term "realist" which in the middle ages meant someone who thought in the actual existence of essences and contrasts with "nominalist" as opposed to the meanings now (contrast with "idealist").

As you quote it favourably I assume you concur with the statement:

"To effect a confusion of ideas is an old scheme of the devil"

And you have just effected a confusion of ideas.

Those damn liberals misleading us with talk of WMD. That stinking liberal, Jack Abramoff, led all those misguided congressmen into Satan's hands. The congressman from Florida, Mark Foley, helping to protect marriage against the wickedness of gays while hitting on young male pages. He is the worst liberal of all.

Yeah, I can see it now.

Look being a Liberal is not evil. In fact, liberals are more for the people than Republicans are, they're just less for religion.

You know, Christians are weird.

You stepped into the very trap that you described so clearly at the beginning of your exposition. Liberalism isn't the opposite of catholicity, it's the opposite of God's law.

to Moiraes Fate, Jesus was a revolutionary but he wasn't liberal. Liberal means broad, Jesus taught about the narrow way.

Your days are over, you filthy neocon bible-thumping trash.
We're taking back America and Jesus, too.
Go back to worshipping your corrupt TV evangelists with their secret homosexual prostitutes and methamphetamine habits.
Your party is out of power and you are out of time.
Begone, peasant, lest I smite you again.
