No, silly, it's not free. It's best that wherever you buy it that you are sure to get the CD, just in case you have problems or need to re-install.
It'll cost you almost $200

WORD TO THE WISE....
If you buy it out of the store, it will be in a sealed box (which you can not return after you open). I bought one and if the girl at the checkout hadn't noticed the box seemed "light" or "empty" and opened it herself, I would have been out of luck. BE SURE IT"S IN THE BOX BEFORE YOU PAY FOR IT.

Windows is not free. Legally, you'll have to buy it in order to use it. Before, certain people have been able to obtain copies of Windows versions and have installed it onto their PCs, but lately, Microsoft has started cracking down on these fake versions of Windows and have disabled as many features as they possibly can on the fake Windows that they find. My friend's Windows Xp was fake, so I know. They're doing this very effectively too, as the automatic updates will automatically detect your operating system's fakeness.

So I guess you'll have to buy it, but before you do, you should know that Microsoft Vista, the successor of Microsoft Windows XP is coming out January 30th and that buying Microsoft Windows now is just a huge waste of money.

Find out more about Vista here:

You need to buy it from the store. Check out newegg.com. They have oem versions which are basically boxless versions at almost half off prices. Besides being illigal, pirated versions can't be activated because of product activation, which puts a limit of one activation per product key.

It would be illegal if you found it for free on the Internet. You need to go to a store. Microsoft.com might have it, but you can't download it, you have to buy it and have the CD shipped to you.

Legally..yes you have to buy it.
Illegally...you can probably download it from a bittorrent site.

But O.S.'s (operating systems) are pretty vital to a pc and its not something you should play around with lightly. I highly suggest just ponying up the cash and trying to find a deal at best buy or something.

You can probably download it online, but it is better to buy it.To explain:In order for you to update your windows, you will need a valid product key,and you can't get one for a pirated copy. So,be wise and buy it.It may cost money, but you will be saved alot of headaches.
