Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

We need more information to make educated suggestions. Where in the country do you live? House, apartment, trailer? Will the dog be a house dog, or outside? If inside, will he be kennel trained or free? There are so many factors to consider when choosing a dog.

Inside, I would choose Sheltie, Corgi, Beagle
Outside, Lab, Border Collie, Beagle

There are many good breeds, but also consider your temperatures.

It depends. If you want energetic, the best dog is a Siberian husky. If you want not so energetic, the best dog is a Sheltie.
Both? A Shiba Inu or a Beagle.

My friend has a border collie who is very loyal and not too spastic. They're very cute but it would depend on wether or not you want a small medium or large dog. Welsh Corgi's are cool cause they don't bark. I also like Pommerainians which I personally think as a bit too fluffy, but one of my dogs is a cross between a pom. and a shih tzu. He is very active but also very smart.

Really depends on your personality and your lifestyle. If it were up to me, I'd go with the Lab, Beagle or the Shiba.

It would be ridiculous to recommend a breed to someone not knowing a thing about lifestyle, energy level, time available to commit to a dog's grooming, exercise, training, etc. If you want any kind of sensible answer, you need to give a lot more info. or any answer is totally worthless.
