Roosters are the Daddy, Hens the Mommy, chicks are the offspring. You need the rooster to make babies but Hens will lay unfertilized eggs without the rooster.

Yes Usherlove the rooster is part of the chicken family. But make no mistake about it my pretty he is no chicken!! He is the one with the dinky-donk that brings all the sweet little eggs into reality. whithout the Rooster, we'd have no chicks.No chicks then no eggs, no eggs, then no chickens. And it goes round and round and round like that.
