i would have posted this in the Philosophy section but i thought there would be a greater response in the spirituality section.

The Buddhists wish to take on the least negative karma as they go about their daily activities. And since "killing" plants & vegetables has far less negative karma than killing animals the Buddhists go for a vegetarian diet. Also non-violence is one of the precepts of Buddhists. They wish to survive on this planet they've found themselves on with the least suffering & spilling of blood so as to develop their love & compassion & peace of mind for their spiritual practice & everyday life.
Anyhow without religious explanation the edible plants seem to call out to us naturally with their bright flowers & abundant fruits & fragrance to eat them while the animals on the other hand seem to be frightened & crying in panic & pain & try to escape whenever we go to kill them for food.

I think the professior Lee already mentioned about the different between eating a plant food and animals. Buddhism believe in rebirth and we are possible become animals next life depends how we did this life. so you ate a pork today and someday you will get eaten by someone else when you become an..anyway.
Buddhist have a great respect for everyone. you can choose to believe in us or not. But there are many non Buddhist that choose to be vegetarian because the pure compassion for the animals. for that same reason why some Buddhist choose to be vegetarian. Is for the compassion of the animals.
if you got a paper cut on your hand, it hurt. how do you think the chicken feel when we kill it for our stomach.
I am try to be a Buddhist and it is not easy for me at all to be a vegetarian but I am still try. wish you good luck.

To be honest, I'm a bit of a hypocrite as I eat meat, but I would say that the killing of plants is less wrong as they don't have sentience (at least not on a detectable level in the same way as even the most simple animals).

sentient beings or not, animal, mineral, vegetable, everything's gotta eat, it's eat and be eaten. The antelope that grazes on the plains, the munching caterpillars, the rabbits and their garden raids, these and countless other creatures are veggies who in turn are eaten by the meat-eaters. If we didnt need food in one form or another we and all living creatures with a digestive system wouldnt exist, even the roots of the plant world draw nutrients from the earth, and the earth, the soil is made up of all that have been before us, ad infinitum.

There is no such thing as "buddists". You probably meant "Buddhists." I am not a Buddhist , but was formerly and learned quite a lot about it. But I can tell you that plants are not considered as living things, and they were supposed to be thered for living beings where are the animals and human beings.
If you kill the animal for food, you cannot grow them again.
But if you eat the fruits and throw away the seed , it will grow again. Even the leaves of the trees or plants, if you but them for your food, it will continue to grow.. But not the same with animals. If you chop an animal's leg, for instance, he won't grow another leg.
I hope that answers your question satisfactorily.

We must eat something! also when you really look at it, from a suffering stand point.....plants do not feel pain, but animals do. Or at least, I dont think we have found pain receptors on plants.
