I have, and it ends up being a very bad situation for both of you. They end up expecting happily ever after, and all you want to do is get out from under. Then when you can't bring yourself to put as much effort into the relationship that they expect, they start begging and humiliating themselves over you. It just leads to a big mess.

BELIEVE ME, I know now that it is much kinder to just say from the very beginning "I'm sorry, but I just don't feel that way about you." And let it end there.

I have done that before, dated a guy because I felt sorry for him. But that was when I was a teenager and again when I was in college. I wouldn't do it now because it only ends up hurting the guy. You think you are doing something nice but then he falls for you and you have to hurt him.

Does it benefit ANYONE? NO, it doesn't. Bad idea. Date someone because you are interested in them and want to know them better, and because you enjoy spending your time with them.
