You continue to be his friend and let him get to know you better. What ever you do, don't outwardly bash the person he's seeing, although if he askes your opinion be polite about your answer. He might eventually see that you're more his type than the one he's with. Wouldn't you rather it be his idea on his own to date you then him guilted into it. If it's meant to be, it will be.

find your own man if that's the direction you're headed. i'd give myself space if i were you. obviously he needs time with his new acquaintance in life.
i wouldn't queston stuff like that too much you can't know why he did something or what he was thinking when he did it unless you ask him and he tells you. So i wouldn't worry about it.
If you need a man, there are plenty out there who need you.
