I have an outdoor cat that had a spot on the side of her head and the side of her neck earlier in the week. I assumed it was from a fight or something may have bitten her. At the time it didn't seem to be botherinig her. But today, I noticed that she has scratched her fur off both sections and scratches to the point that they bleed. I plan on taking her to the vet first thing in the week, but am just wondering if anyone knows what this could be and anything that I can do at home in the meantime to make her more comfortable.

I too have an outdoor cat, Rocky, (aptly named, as he's a scrapper...lol), and he comes home often with bite wounds. These are dangerous, and I have had two such wounds treated by my vet because they became so badly infected.

The best thing to do is make sure the area is cleaned with a warm-hot compress, gently urging out the infection (sometimes it's bloody and oozing of puss). If she'll let you get near it, use some anti-botic ointment or salve on it in. Try to keep her indoors until your trip to the vet.

Good luck.

The spots are most likely to be ringworm. Cats pick them up from infected gardens or yards. They are contagious but relatively simple to treat. You do need to go to the vet though and the vet will confirm if they are ringworm. Treatment consists of antibiotics (for secondary infection) and an anti-fungal cream. Meantime, clean the sores with hydrogen peroxide. When my cat had ringworm, I cleaned his sores with hydrogen peroxide before applying the antifungal cream. He also had amoxicillin oral anibiotic and the sores cleared up in a little more than a week.

Could be ring worm. Cats are prone to it and it is very ichie. Wash your hand after touching your cat until you get her to the vet. She could give it to you. Arid deorderant will help ease her itching. no this is not a joke. we use it all the time on the farm when the cats, sheep, and kids get ring worm.

Your cat could have developed a type of mange. You should take him to the vet and have him checked out.
