In order to take my dog with me on Northwest Airlines, I had to pay $80 USD. The dog had to be in a carrier underneath the seat.

Depends on the size of the dog and the airline.
Some airlines do not transport animals at all. Check with yours.
However, whether the dog is in a carrier under your seat, or in a carrier in the plane's hold, you will have to pay a charge, depending on your destination. Definitely, it will not be as much as passenger ticket.
If you travel internationally, also check whether your dog's breed is acceptable and what documentation, e.g. shotrecords is necessary.

I've have traveled with a dog on an airplane. You do not have to buy a ticket for you dog. My airline made me pay 75 dollars as a charge for having a dog on the plane. You have to keep the dog under your seat in a airline aproved bag or kennel. Usually they are soft cases for the dog. You must make sure that this is a airline approved bag or else they will not let the dog ride. I do not remember the airline i took specifically this time. But make sure that you check with them on their specific regulations for having a dog on the plane. All in all they do allow it, and you do not have to buy a seat fr the dog, but there are strict specification that vary from airline to airline.

you do not have to buy a ticket, you can get a doggy carrier and take her as a carry on. your dog would be required to either stay in the carrier, or stay on your lap.

umm you would have to pay for somthing. i dont think you can bring him into the cabin because some one on the aircraft might be allergic. so they would put him with the luggage. but you need to call the airlne because if you buy that extra ticket and come to the airport and they say no your screwed

get real please! u have to buy your pets tickets to get underneth the plane in the 1st place, u cant just rock up to the airport and expect the airline to take it.
what if it wanted a crap? and if it started baking, ur in deep dodo!!
