Because people quit flipping pages with their licked toes when they learned of germs. This is also why we eat with our hands rather than our feet.

I'm sure it wasn't a habit, its just a way to unstuck pages without having to do any thing drastic every time you read a book..

paper sticks to wet....but i don't lick my fingers unless i think they will taste good

I don't know but it is disgusting. Particulary those who do it to newspapers.
