I have a small frame. I have next to nil for calves. I have a great proprotioned shape except for my lower legs. I do calves excercises but they do not seem to get any larger. I don't want those ball looking calf muscle like the body builders have, just decent looking lower legs that match my upper half. I am so insecure I don't wear skirts very often. I am 35 years old and thought I would grow out of this insecurity as I age but I haven't. I know, I know, I should be thankful and secure with what I have but this is something I have never gotten over. I have heard calves arethe hardest muscle to train and gain size...I have bad knees too and lifting heavy doing calf exercises is tough. Any advice on how to do this without hurting myself would really help me. I am working out regularly 3-4 days a week and want to start adding a calf excersize routine in at least twice a week.

Just in case someone suggest this..I wear 2.5 3.5 inch heels 5 days a week for work. Doesnt help.

Larger Calf's very hard to get if you don't do the correct exercise for them.
Well here is the deal on lifting , I am an EX power lifter and then changed my style

I have always had somewhat big calf's but Never defined.
Here are a few things that will help increase the size and definition of your calf muscles.

Riding a Bike on the street but instead of peddling with the bottom of your feet use the ball of your foot right below the toes.

On the Leg press machine do 10 sets of 20 reps and increase weight / sets after a few weeks or until you have adapted to the calf workout.

Stand and do calf raises holding dumbbells by your sides, make sure you face in a mirror so you can actually see the Calf muscle working.

* NOTE * when you do calf raises with the Leg machine or dumbells when you push off and reach the top force yourself to hold for a split second, this will increase the tear and cause larger muscles.
Small Muscles like Bi-ceps and Calfs need 48 hrs to heal and large muscles need 72 hrs to heal.

Most important make sure you eat foods for building muscles, You do not BUILD muscle during your work-outs like everyone thinks, You build muscles AFTER your done working out and when your muscle starts to heal and rebuild.

Women don't grow huge muscles very easily. It just doesnt work like that. The only thing I can recommend is weights with high amounts of weigh for short periods of time. I know it will hurt, but with pain comes pleasure.
