Chihuahuas are great house dogs. Smart and hearty too. I have two dogs that are part Chihuahua. One will be 16 soon and the other one is going on 15. They have been wonderful pets!! Low maintenance and healthy all their lives.

I highly recommend a mixed bred dog or puppy. Please consider adopting from a shelter or rescue!! Save a life while enhancing yours!!

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder. Happy Hunting!!!!

My personal favorite is the Doberman

Bijon Frise dogs are great housedogs. They don't shed, they're friendly and playful, and they will bark when needed.
They are a small dog and look similar to a poodle.
Temperament
Gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate. A cheerful attitude is the hallmark of the breed and one should settle for nothing less. Here's the link for the AKC about this breed.

My mom has 2 and they are so fun. The male is kinda mellow, and the female is energetic and inquisitive.

I have an English Springer Spaniel. I love this breed, but he is NOT an inside dog! He sheds a lot, loves to get wet, loves to get dirty, and loves being outdoors where theres plenty to do or watch for. He's my best bud outdoors, follows me everywhere, loves to swim and dive for toys. Great companion.

Sure! Everytime I go to my local animal shelter I see at least two or three young dogs, cute, beautiful that would make excellent watchdogs! Try it, you'll see!
The best dogs I have had (save one) were all mixed breeds. The one that was not mixed breed was a collie. He was very special. But all of my dogs have been great watchdogs. I have had Great Danes, Boxers, a Cocker mix, a Saint Bernard, and all the rest were various mixed breeds.
They all have the instinct to protect their den and their pack.

There are TONS of them. Try looking on dogbreedinfo.com and AKC.org to look at all the different breeds they have. I think boston terriers boxers and pit bulls are really cute, i don't know that you want a small dog or a large dog. But they can all give warming barks when someone comes around. You can also visit petfinder.com to find available dogs that are in shelters in your area. Good Luck on finding your new companion!

Mixed breeds (mutts). They usually ahve pretty good temperaments, and take traits from teh different kinds of dogs they were bred from. I have a Sheltie Chow with a lil german shepherd. hes almost 4, loveable, safe around visitors and yet defensive. He's a medium size dog and does like his exercise, but he doesn't go crazy chewing if eh gets bored and restless. Try to find a dog that will relax, but that isnt so lazy it'll get obese.

Research the Wheaton Terrier. I live in a condo and my Wheaton loves it here. Wheatons are lovable and friendly dogs that need to be played with and walked for exercise.
Mine was a "pound puppy" and she has become a real member of the family. She is a good watchdog, but very good with the children too.
Check with your local rescue league or pound. Wheaton Terriers also have a rescue league on the internet.

Shitzus are good dogs in the house. They are fluffy so they're nice to have on your lap. They like being around there master. Mine is always hanging around me. There fur gets long so they can act like a mop to your floor. If you don't like long furred dogs you can always cut it. Who can resist there cute little face?
