Sorry with what happened to Terri brother in law, but that could happened everywhere! I live in South Florida and the situation in not so different , you do not go at night to Miami downtown? Hell no!
Old city (called "El centro") is the better place. whatch out! there are a lot of imitations!and they will try to sell them like real art (real stuffs are in the museums). Weekends they have fairs and freemarkets, you will find books, records, etc. As long as you do not stay until late there, you will be safe. Do not carry a lot of money or a lot of credit cards (get a safety box in an hotel).
And always ask the guys in the hotel, they know their city!
Galapagos is a nature center, most that you will find is nature related, Darwin theory and so on. Quito Colonial shows more options for you shopping.

Whatever you do, just be very careful, my brother in law was just killed in Quito by 3 robbers, they took his wallet, jewellery, his cell phone even his shoes, they beat him up and left him to die in an alley. Do not walk at night alone, Quito has become a very corrupted and dangerous city, like most of the country.
