I have a fascination with creating drumbeats with my brother, i need a software program that can allow me to record from my microphone a few different beats and put them together.

you can try Audicity, which is a free open source audio editor

I would recommend a program called Audacity. It is free like they said above. On Audacity you can create and edit sound or you can import files to edit them (only audio). You edit the sound with the on screen graph, change pitches change tempo, change speed, and if you are recording yourself talking, you can remove the noise, you know, all of that rift raft that you hear in the background. Note, you can only import WAV files. If will not work with MP3, unless you change it's formatt. Hope you have fun and I hope this gives you an idea of what Audacity is.
