Dirt, dust, water, and other parts of the Earth's surface are moving around all the time. In addition, solid objects tend to erode. When people still live in a settlement, they sweep dirt away and they repair damage. But when a place becomes abandoned, dirt settles more and more heavily on it. Wind and rain erode the buildings into crumbled pieces that are even more easily covered. In some cases, catastrophic events destroy and bury a community, in the way that Vesuvius completely entombed Pompeii and Herculaneum. Eventually, an abandoned town may collapse into a tel, which is a mound of earth. Sometimes, an active settlement sits on a tel that was left by ancient cities on the same site.

Wind carries and deposits dust and dirt as does water. Sometimes, volcanoes do it quite rapidly. And dirt is being made all the time through erosion and weathering.
