Where would you look for such a car? How would you test it if you don't know anything about cars? What's the price range for a used small sedan that would get me around the city as a college kid?

Look on websites like eBay Motors... Check on the NickelAds, and check out AutoTrader or CarSoup. Edmunds and KBB websites also have much help to offer.

Look for the newest car with the lowest mileage for about $5k.

Honda and Toyota make great cars.

look around your area most dealerships have used cars. before you buy one do a carfax report on it that will tell you things the dealer wont such as if the car has ever been in an accident. when you go to look at a car take a friend or family member with you someone who knows about cars. also check the classifieds to see if anyone around you is selling somthing you might be interested in. you should be able to get a small used sedan for under 10,000. i would suggest a foreign car just because they are cheaper and extremly good on milage.

Kia's are on sale all the time where i live, brand new, 100,000 mile warranty, for only 7,995. Could look into that. Then again, i only paid 800 for my car, near 200,000 miles but runs like a charm

The only way of trying to "plan ahead" for the possible disaster is to buy an Extended Warranty when you buy the vehicle. Another is to buy from a New Car Dealer's used lot.

Kelly's Blue Book (kbb.com) would help you find info about the average cost of a particular car you are looking for. Car facts would let you know about the history of the car provided that you have the VIN number.

your local newspapers website will show the local ads. Buy from a private party. Try to find a car from the suburbs and be sure to take it to a mechanic to have it checked out before you buy.
