Amoxicillin without having a virus to kill it with may do nothing to you YET.

What happens is your body has a memory cell that keeps in mind every virus or cold that has invaded your body. If you use a medicine that you do not need, you will weaken your antibodies or kill them (your white blood cells that protect you) and when this virus does invade your body, that amoxcillin will not be able to help you as much as you need it. That is why doctors are reluctant to prescribe antibiotics to people, only to prevent them from needing a stronger prescription of antibiotics.

But if you are taking antibiotics and you were sick and now feeling better, TAKE THE ENTIRE AMOUNT. Because the virus could still be in your body and it(the medicine) wont completely kill the virus and you'll have a bigger problem. You'll be sick again, and end up having to take a stronger dose of the medicaine you've just finish taking, AND your white blood cells will be weak and put up a resistance from the medicine to your body.

That is why you should not take medicine if you dont need it.

Most of these answers are on the right track. Except the one about the Virus. Amoxicillin is an anti-bacterial, which means it kills Bacteria the common cold and viruses are untouched by amox.

The danger lies first of all in Allergy to Amox. That's a potentially fatal danger. This is why you should not take drugs that you don't need, Risk benefits are outweighed, if you have nothing to gain by taking it you still have all the risks, (albeit in this case quite low).

Secondly, you can kill of the Bacteria in your bod that help you. Amox doesn't really care what it's killing it goes after bacteria, both good and bad. Basically the bacteria that are native to you keep everything in balance. If you kill off too much of one type you can get overgrowth of another, this can cause other types of infections and problems, (IE. Bacterial enteritis, Horrible Horrible diarrhea, Yeast infections and other fun stuff)

Plus using Antibiotics without killing all the bad stuff, not finishing a prescription, could lead those bacteria to mutate and be unaffected by that Antibiotic, a current case that is a growing concern is MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus Aureus)

Hope that helps.

Amoxicillin is an extremely safe antibiotic as long as you are not allergic to it. If you do not have a bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract or ear, taking amoxicillin will not help you but should not hurt you either.

Rashes, diarrhea, overgrowth of amoxicillin-resistant bacteria, and other overgrowth syndromes such as yeast infections are the biggest concerns. Overall, the rate of its making people sick tends to run 5-10%.

I won't do anything bad unless you take a bunch of it. Then it runs a chance of giving you massive diarrhea because it kills the good bacteria in the stomach. I wouldn't take it though since some believe frivolous usage like leads to resistant strains of bacteria.

It could allow resistant strains of bacteria in your body to flourish, which you REALLY don't want.

It will develop in your body future resistance to infections thus making antibiotics useless when you get sick.

it'll make your body more tolerant of it so when you really need it, it won't be as effective. you should NEVER take antibiotics unless absolutely needed!
