The armed forces are politically controlled, which means that it is bureaucratic in nature. The generals don't control what happens in war, the politicians sitting in their ivory towers at the senate and the congress tell the generals what to do, and when things go wrong, the generals are the fall guys. The U.S. generals in Iraq were lauded for the tremendous jobs they were doing, and all of a sudden, our sage commander in chief, decides to yank them. You draw your own conclusions.

Depends. The military is very different according to your speciality. The air wing is different than the ground prounders. What are you looking for specifically?
