There is no "best" way...everyway in the end comes out to the same thing. Breaking up with someone isn't easy but I think it's better if you do it in person...but don't do something like over the phone. Make the person feel like they're worth enough for a little visit, even if it's to announce something not-so-good. =)

Not in an email! Please don't "email" your breakup news. It's tacky and low-brow. It also speaks volumes about how little you respect your partner.

The best way is just to say that things are not working out and you feel it best that the two of you go your separate ways. There really is not need for further discussion, although they will probably ask. Try not to dwell on their faults, but be honest. Sometimes things are just not meant to last very long, and there really is no explanation. People stop loving one another, feelings change, whatever. Just be kind.

And no further contact after the break-up. Don't prolong their agony by calling them.
