If you have the recovery disks for his comp, you can use them. Put the first CD in the disk drive, reboot. Once the computer starts up, it will give you the option to press "R" to run the recovery disks. Select "R", and follow the steps to reformat your hard drive. You should be given the options to run a "non-destructive reformat" or a "destructive reformat". A non-destructive reformat will only replace the system/os files to their original "factory shipped condition" without erasing any other data on your PC. The destructive reformat option will completely erase all of your data on your comp and completely reinstall windows.

f8 gives it the option for Safe Mode, not format. With Win2000, a boot disk will allow you to format the drive. Once you put the boot disk in. Reboot. it will come up to the command prompt. then type, without quotes, "format c:" after this, it will take a little while, insert the restoration Cd's and follow the instructions. Or if you are just using the windows CD, put it in and it should auto boot. If it doesn't you can change the boot options in the BIOS, or on you may be able to press F10 when the computer boots to go to the boot menu, then choose the corresponding drive that the CD is in. This will wipe the computer clean with no information at all. Then re-install Windows and the programs he wants on it and you should be in the clear.

PS for future reference. The processor is unit in the computer that processes the information. Try using the word "tower" in the future to clarify. That will signify what it is you are intending to speak about.

I agree with you. Technology has increased in the past several years. Even in the last 4 to 5 years. It would do him better to get a new computer.....they're a lot faster, more dependable, plus they have a lot more storage space than say even 3 years ago. For example, my computer at home as a 1gig RAM, and 120 gig hard drive. I have a CD/DVD burner that burns them at triple the rate from my old computer form 2001. I also have all my hookups in the front of the computer so it makes access really easy. The windows XP that I have is awesome, compared to window millennium that I had before. Plus I have a flat screen monitor, so I have no glare from the sun shining through the windows in my house, and the colors are so much more better. Tell your boyfriend that buying a new computer is like night and day compared to his old computer. I'm sure that they even have laptops that can outdo his computer now. Have a great day...........

Put the windows CD into the drive, reset the computer, press Delete at the black start up screen to get into the BIOS, change the start drive to CD, save and exit.
The computer will now start from the CD and not the hard drive.
Format the hard drive, do not load windows over the existing version.
Re install the motherboard drivers, the sound drivers, the graphic drivers and any add ons that it has.

You have an easy question. First of all you don't have to go out a buy another computer at all, nor do you need to buy another hard drive. Here is what you can do. Go to "MY COMPUTER" click on your local disk which is "C" drive right click on it, scroll down to format and then click and follow props. This will erase everything on your system, except your basic files. Good luck! If you have any problems send me an email and I'll walk you through it step by step

IF YOU HAVE THE STARTUP DISCTHAT CAME WITH YOUR COMPUTER THEN PUT DISC 1 IN. IT SHOULD ASK YOU IF YOU WANT TO FORMAT THIS DRIVE. DO IT. IT WILL REMOVE EVERYTHING BUT ONCE ALL THE DISC HAVE BEEN USED, YOUR COMPUTER WILL JUST LIKE IT WAS THE DAY IT WAS PURCHASED WITHOUT ANYTHING THAT WAS OUT ON IT AFTER DAY 1. IT WILL BE JUST LIKE IT CAME OUT OF THE BOX.

You go to the control panel and select add/remove programs. Remove the programs you know you no longer need.

It is clear from your question that you do not know much about computers. Please ask a parent or someone to help you.

i think you can hit the f8 key to reformat the hard drive. hit f8 while it's booting up, kind of before it starts.
