Has your friend gone back yet? Was he truly AWOL, absent without leave, or was he UA, unauthorized absebce? The difference is, you're not AWOL until the 30th day of being UA.
I never saw an AWOL that didn't go to a court martial. I see a loss of rank, loss of pay for so many months, and some time in the Brig. Very likely, this person will eventually get a general under other than honorable conditions, or bad conduct discharge.
All this, rightfully so. It isn't that hard to follow the rules. If you don't, you get what you deserve.

I'm guessing, but I would say that Your friend will face a field grade article 15. Loss of pay and allowances for 30 days, restricton and possibly extra duty and be reduced in rank by one pay grade.

Non Juditial ....Could lose rank and pay....small or suspended brig time
Be charged with desertion ( We are at war) Could go to Levinworth or be sentenced to death.
