I had a friend who had a pit bull and the dog was a wonderful pet. Make sure you get one from a reliable breeder and one that doesn't come from an aggressive background. Basically find a breeder who breeds for show and get one of their "pet quality" ones. Breeder sell puppies that aren't show dog material as pet quality.

The breed is more prone to aggressive tendency but proper training of your pet and especially you will give you a top quality relationship with your dog and others. Obedience training is a must for such a breed.

I personally don't think there is a bad dog only bad owners. You have to work with animals to have a good pet. Like Cesar Milan says "exercise, discipline then affection." "Be the pack leader."

Please do NOT listen to all the biased people. Most of them have formed their opinions by watching too much news and listening to too many made up stories. The truth is if they are raised right they are the best dogs in the world. They are very loving and dedicated to their masters. I have one that is true to the breed standard. He loves children and other dogs, is very friendly and will protect those he loves if they are in trouble. The sad thing is these dogs are exploited for their strength and they are made too look bad by the news. But put into numbers the number one breed for unprovoked attacks is the Akita. If you ever get a chance watch the Dog Whisperer with Caesar Milan he loves the breed and has several. Of all people him being an expert would know the truth.

No, they make good attack dogs. My cousin wants a pitbull so bad that when he was visiting a friend with a pitbull that pitbull attacked his arm. But yet he doesn't care and still wants to get a pitbull. But as for me at any family gatherings that if and when he bring's his pitbull I will not be there and neither will our dog.

Pitbulls are not very good pets even if they are well trained. This is because they are bred to be agressive and so even the nicest one can be unpredictable and attack one day out of the blue.

Also their jaws lock on to the thing they are attacking so that it is impossible to pull the dog off or even for the dog to stop if it wants to.

Also there are so many nice dogs out there that dont have a natural agressive nature why bother with a dog that could pounce one day?

Get a nice rescue doggy instead.

After reading all previous answers,I can only say this.....
Far too much depends on the breeding & indivdual dog's dis-
position &....how the dog is RAISED....for a person that has to
ASK this question....to take a chance on....if you are considering
ownership.
Sorry,but you,ve touched on a sore spot.I'm a 62 yr. old dog
lover & I've known some of this breed that were absolute sweet-
hearts & a lot that were an issue.MOSTLY due to poor breed-
ing & compounded by POORLY qualified owners.
This is presisely why so many of their breed ( & cross-breeds)
are religated to animal shelters("death-row") or being seized as
vicious animals.
I certainly hope that your question was asked out of curiosity.

YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, NOT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE ONE.

First, they need to be very well socialized. It is imperitive that they are exposed to men, women, kids, african americans, caucations, asians, men with beards, fat people, skinny people, loud people, quiet people, other dogs, cats, loud noises, grass, concrete, snow (if applicable), cars, trucks, van, the UPS and Fed EX truck. You get the picture.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME TO DO THIS, DO NOT GET A PIT BULL

Second, They are GREAT dogs, HOWEVER, they are also domineering. You MUST be able to have absolute control over them. They *WILL* test your limits untill they know that YOU are in charge, thay have to do what you say and there is no other way around it.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME TO DO THIS, DO NOT GET A PIT BULL

Third, you HAVE to train them. If nothing else, the basic sit, stay, come, heel, down, and drop it. (Also, if you have an obedient pit, people tend to be more receptive to it)

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME TO DO THIS, DO NOT GET A PIT BULL

Fourth, they need a TON af exercise!

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME TO DO THIS, DO NOT GET A PIT BULL

Fifth, You may need extra home owners insurance (I know, I think it is stupid too)

Now, If you can provide that and still want one, than by all means, get one. THEY ARE WELL WORTH IT

They ABSOLUTELY do! I love pit bulls. I do not own a dog yet because i live in an apartment and i can not afford one. But when i do get a dog i am going to get a pit bull because they are so wonderful. I know a lot of people who have pit bulls, and i see a lot of them at the vet clinic where i work. I have never met a mean pit bull. They are friendly dogs who love everyone, they just need a lot of exercise. And they also need to be socialized well with other dogs when they are young.

Pittbulls can make good pets if they are trained and cared for properly. Any dog can be mean and dangerous.

If you have the time and temperament to care for a large dog, a pittbull will be a great pet.

It depends. I have had 6 pitbulls during my life. All of them have been very well behaved and nonagressive towards people. However it all depends on how YOU raise the dog to act. If you hit it or are abusive or reward bad behavior then it will be a bad dog.

A properly socialized, well trained (using positive reinforcement) pitbull makes a wonderful pet, if you have the time and energy to suit the dog's needs.
