For over a week I was hearing a buzzing sound through my 1998 Ford Mustang V6’s stereo speakers. This would occur whenever I would rev (hit the gas) the engine. At first I thought that the speakers might be going bad. So last night the red battery indicator light came on. So I thought the Sears Die Hard Gold Battery was going bad. I have had the battery since about 2001. The battery gage was fine and had never gone down past the normal section. I do NOT have any modifications on the car stereo system.

I asked a mechanic friend and told him about the buzzing sound in the stereo system when revving up the engine. He told me that the alternator is going bad and that the red light coming on means that it is no longer able to charge. He told me not to drive the car any further until I get the alternator replaced because the car would most likely die on me.

Does any one have any thoughts on this issue?

Again I do NOT have any stereo modifications. It is the STOCK stereo. The batter indicator would not come on because I had a lose ground wire for the stereo.

The mechanic friend said that the ALERANTOR is GOING BAD not that it has completely stoped working. He stated that it is no longer charging, which means that the car is just living off whatever remaining power is left in the battery.

Also the buzzing occurs only when the Radio is on and not the CD player.

I appreciate the answers that people are providing. But once again I have done NO MODIFICATIONS to the STOCK stereo system. I can see the noise suppressor probably stopping the buzzing in the speakers but how will a noise suppressor fix the problem with the batter light indicator and the battery indicator showing the charge on the battery going down? Are people really screwing around with their stereo systems that much just to get that extra wattage?

It appears that it is more than likely the ALTERNATOR.

The mechanic person I know replaced the alternator and that was the problem. When I got to the mechanic’s shop I parked and turned off the engine. When he told me to move the car, the engine would no longer start. He used a battery charger to jump start the car so he could get it into the shop. He changed the alternator, oil and power steering fluid and now I hear NO buzzing/humming sound any longer when the radio is on and the battery indicator is gone and the battery meter is back to normal.

The problem had NOTHING to do with the stock stereo system. I did NOTHING to the stereo system ever. The humming was being picked up by the radio and it NEVER occurred when the CD player was on just during radio play.

Final outcome it was the ALTERNATOR! Thank God that I didn't go out and buy a new battery because it would have been a waste of MONEY.

Thanks for your replies!!!

Sounds about right. A bad alternator can do weird things. That is just an example of one of them.

It's the ground in either your stereo or your amp. If you go to a car stereo shop they will try to sell you a noise reducer, but it's wasted money. Just find the black wire on your stereo amp or whatever else you have running and make sure it is making a solid connection with metal on the car.

The only other possibility is crappy rca cables, but it is most likely the ground.

If your battery is getting more than 12volts when the car is off, it's not the alternator. If the battery reads less than 12.1 it is the alternator.

Engine Revving Sound

IF you have ever pulled up your carpet or cut the wire loom that goes along the edge floor by the door. You could have a power wire that has come into contact with the speaker wire. Or a sliced speaker wire that is in contact with bare metal. When I used to install stereos we always ran the power on the opposite sides of the car to eliminate the engine noise. Alot of stovk systems come with everything on one side of the car.

you have to determine if this noise is from your alternator or from ignition system. spark problems has a ticking sound, the alternator problem will whine. You may need ground straps to the hood for spark noise.radio power line filter for alternator noise. The best solution is to find out what is defective in your car, bad wires, filter capacitors on spark coil, poor ground connections, bad brush assembly in the alternator? Fixing the offending problem may also be good for your car. The radio noise is not a problem, but a symptom of something else wrong.

you need to get a new alternator or you are going to get stranded, get that and if you still have the noise change your plug wires as that is usually the sign that your wires are going bad. You can also go to radio shack and buy a noise supression filter that goes in the positive line to the radio that will take that noise out.

That sounds about right, since it's not modifed. The only other thing that I can think of would be the internal amp/deck from you stock stereo. If it's going bad you would get the same feedback.
