Human language originated about 100,000 years ago when modern Homo sapiens sapiens evolved in Africa. There were certain cognitive structures which allowed language to evolve from very primitive vocalizations among earlier hominids. The principal difference was the evolution of irrealis and metaphor. Irrealis is the ability to speak about things that are not real-possibility, potentiality, prevarication, obligation, future, distant past, etc. Metaphor is the ability to apply the name for one thing to something else that is similar. These two cognitive developments allowed modern human language in all its complexity to evolve. As Homo sapiens sapiens spread out of Africa, language spread with him and changed and divided into dialects and languages over time.
