Sleeper holds ...

You REALLY gotta be careful about applying one/having someone apply one on you.

*The carotid arteries are located on the neck.

*Application of pressure on these arteries will cause the "sleeper" effect.

*Lots of people tend to choke the victim when they try to apply the technique, mostly from a combination of panic and insufficient training (re., LAPD during the early/mid-1990's, several suspects died/were badly injured to the point that this hold was no longer officially allowed. Please check this out for yourself ...).

*Still others who CORRECTLY apply this technique don't release it in time (again, panic/insufficient training/etc.), and the victim suffers brain damage or death.

Please don't mess with this technique.

I experienced this a few times in college, when I was on the Judo team. It didn't take long (only a few seconds for incapacitation), and it probably explains my failure to pass the Cal. Bar Exam ... (:=] ... D'oh!

bpshark hit it on the head.

I will answer your questions directly, again cautioning not to go around playing with that sort of thing.

Yes anyone could apply a "sleeper" hold, it is basically a carotid artery choke.

It works as many people stated above, by depriving the brain of oxygen (blood).

How does it feel when you see your victim going to sleep? Well most of the time you don't "see" them per say as most chokes are done from behind, or to the side of an opponent, while there are some face to face type of chokes, the effect is still the same.

The person just knocks out, you feel them go limp, you may here them begin to snore, after a very short amount of time their body begins to convulse.

If you would like to experience one, go to any local Judo club, Ju-Jitsu club, etc. Keep in mind you have to be a certain age (which I don't think you are) and that while it sounds cool to try to experience, it really isn't pleasant or fun and your body pretty much panics like you would if you were drowning, or can't breathe.

Even after getting used to it, that moment right before unconsciousness is very frightening.

As a Martial Arts Instructor, Ju-jitsu Black belt and a law enforcement agent, I must warn you to the dangers of this type of techniques. Like the other members explain there are many techniques that will achieve the result you are looking for. They can basically be divided in two groups, carotid controls (strangulation), and chokes. Chokes restrict the airway so you cant breath, and carotid controls restrict the flow of oxygenated blood to your brain. A properly applied hold (both chokes and strangulation) will render a person unconscious in less that 15 seconds. 8-10 seconds being the norm. Again i do not recommend trying this techniques without the supervision of a train professional.

P.S. Law enforcement officers in most states are not allowed to use this techniques except in deadly force situations.

I really recomend you don't try it out. Not without a properly trained person. There are rules and laws that govern who and when those techniques can be tought. For instance in Judo only people 14 and older can learn them and only a black belt can teach them. So if you have to know go to the following link but if you end up hurt or hurt someone. Remember this would you really want to find out what shooting yourself in the foot feels like...
Keep in mind all the techniques shown are the same you will find in Ju Jitsu or Aikido....

"Sleeper" holds are easy to apply . It works by cutting off the blood flow to the brain . I feel like I won the fight. If you want to experience one ask an army drill sergeant .

When you wrap your arms around the neck you are putting pressure on the arteries on either side. It is very dangerous as if done wrong permanent damage can be done to the brain. Basically when the body goes fatigued, just before limp you release. The feeling is similar to bending over and breathing heavy for 30 breaths, and someone putting a bear hug around your waist, they let go and you pass out. The pressure on your neck will hurt a bit when you come to though, be very careful if trying.

Try to slap arround a police officer , they will be happy to apply one on you. Most Police Services are well trained in this technique.
