pull It up, wash and scrub the floor clean, go to hardware store and get products for stripping the floor and then finishing it and then protecting it from wear. We did ours and it is beautiful now.

Along the walls they lay a strip of wood with small nails that stick up into the carpet and then the carpet tucked between the strip and wall. Remove the Trim and take some needle nose pliers or something to lift out the carpet from the nail strip. Then it should roll up, or cut into smaller sections for easier removal. Usually the Floor underneath with need to be refinished as over the years, things being spilled with cause some areas to be darker than others. You may need a little wood filler to fill in the holes where the wood strip was nailed to the floor, IF, the wall trim not cover this.
The above answer about the easiest way to refinish.

This is so much work, first you vacuum (reduces dust) then pull up the carpet, remove the tack strip, seal all the entries against dust (don't forget the heating ducts) sand and refinish the floor with a machine you can rent at any home store. This is a 5-7 day project and you will be very sore if you do it alone - enlist friends and it can be done in 3. Really if you can -hire this job out it is a pain. Good Luck!

that is 2 questions. One removing the carpet-carefully. It should not be glued down anyways, just take off the baseboard and cut the carpet along the wall if it doesn't let go.

a BAD floor may be the reason the carpet was put there in the first place.
