I'd like to dye it a strong Red or Purple, but my hair is pretty close to black

You should go to a hairdressers! I wanted to do exactly the same as you, bright purple streaks. My hair is also almost black. I thought I was being sensible & saving money by buying my own bleaching kit, it took ages, I followed all the instructions & time guidelines, yet it came out a horrible gingery colour!! I recently spoke to a hairdresser & was told I would need my hair 'stripping' of all colour, though I've not done it yet.
I hope this helps, if you have it done let me know how it goes, unless I beat you to it! lol
Good luck!

My suggestion would be to get highlights and have them colored red or purple. It's really hard on dark hair to lightin it because you have to leave the bleach on for a much longer period of time. And if you leave it on to long your hair can break off or get gummy. Just remember that red is one of the hardest colors to get in and out!! Good luck I'm sure it will look good! =)

Go to a salon. Don't bleach it by yourself because your hair will turn out brassy and orange. After that the Red of Purple will actually hold on to the color and turn out bright and vibrant.

Good luck.

bleach it first, and be careful; follow the instructions on the package of bleach. I use Blonde Brilliance, and buy it from Sally, to get my hair a bright hot pink from dark brown with come black in it. then, use whatever dye you want, but MAKE SURE you condition in THOROUGHLY afterwords. this is a big deal.

I'd go to the hairdressers if I was you. You don't want your hair to end up looking like mine!!!! Not only that but they might have to lighten it first so as to get the colour you want. If you try to bleach it your self at home, you might leave it on to long end end up snapping your hair off. Listen to one who has learnt the hard way.

buy a dye that contains a bleach... it'll dye your hair the colour on the box no matter what colour it is to start off with...

Go to a reputable salon. It costs around $50 here and that way you won't wreck your hair. See you'll have to bleach it before you do anything else.

Go to a good hair salon and let them do it. If they charge less than £80 for a cut and blow dry plus colour they aren't a good salon!!!

Well, that's my slightly twisted opinion - lol!

try just getting highlights. why do you wanna dye your hair? dying is usless, it doesn't do anything to you. if you have natural hair color then i think it would look better.
