well ya i have this lab who is 4 years old and she is a spayed female ....well i've noticed a "spot" on my bed after she lays on it i know this isn't pee because she's house trained and the spots aren't that big ... well its happened twice in a one or two week period of time.... i think it's her anal glands, but i'm not sure .... i haven't had this problem with her before because she is mostly an outside dog.. she 's gotten them squeezed a couple of times but i wasn't sure how often they had to be ..am i right in assuming it's her anal gland or is it somehting else do you think???... and if it is what sould i do?? should i take her to the vet or get someone to show me how to do it or look on websites or what??

unfortunatley i cant tell the color of the spot because i have a black comforter and it doesn't leak through ... plus it's not pee because i smelled it ...and ya doesn't smell like it because i have a young puppy who is about finished with house training and ya ive cleaned up the rugs many times.. it smelled sort of weird though but i cant really tell because i have a cold .. but the first time it didn't really smell like anything but it was too big for drool...i think i sorta know wat it smells like because one day i picked up my puppy ( different breed of dog) and her butt was sorta wet and ya i got it on my hand ( when i didnt have a cold) and it stunk sorta bad....is there any way that's inexpensive to do this... because i do the bathing, the nail cliping (actually i don't really do that the strip of cement that i have in my yard help wear it down) the ear cleaning, and the teeth brushing all by myself... so i am prepared for anything..well almost

What colour is the spot?
Anal gland leakage will be dark brown to black and have a very foul rotten fish type smell. If anal glands ask your vet to teach you how to express them and do them everytime (before ) you bath her. Anal glands need expressing at different time periods its different for each individual dog.
If the wet spot had no colour it could be urine - some female dogs develope urinary incontinence (yes even at a young age) there are hormone treatments that will help tighten the urinary spincter and stop the leakage.

The anal glands on most dogs should be squeezed by a vet or a groomer at least 3 times each year. The larger the dog, the more often this has to be performed.

A lab is a large dog, and typically their glands should be released at least every other month.

A vet is expensive........take your dog to a groomer for a bath and nail clipping, and ask them to pay attention to the glands. Total cost $40-50 versus $80-150 at a vet.

Good luck! Labs are great dogs!
