If I were to like a girl and she liked me than I would ask her out, that is how you tell when someone likes you.
Did he laugh while asking you out, how do you know he was joking, perhaps you are feeling insecure about this and just need encouragement from someone who also knows him, and can give you feed back.
Besides if a person plays around by asking another person out for the "laugh" than they are far too immature for your time anyways.
It's like if you were sitting at the dinner table and you ask one of your parents, "Could I have another dinner roll please?" they pass it to you and so you laugh and say "No I was just kidding, haha you look so stupid now".
Now that doesn't make any sense does it? Neither does asking out a person whom you don't want to date.
